  • You’ve mentioned that NYC inspires you to “not play it small.” What has that looked like for you since living here?

I think the word "impossible" really doesn't exist in a New Yorker's vocabulary (except maybe when it comes to finding an affordable apartment with good sunlight and in-unit laundry). The city itself reflects that kind of "anything can happen" existence: an openness to all kinds of beautiful possibilities. Serendipitous and seemingly magical things happen every day here, whether that's running into a friend you haven't seen in 5 years on your subway car or passing your favorite opera singer on the street in your neighborhood. This is a place where you will really never be a big fish in a little pond, which can make one feel quite anonymous. That can be equally lonely and liberating. But as someone who has been painfully self-conscious and self-critical at different points in her life, I absolutely love that a moment of embarrassment or so-called "cringe" in New York City feels so much shorter and less significant than embarrassing yourself in, say, a town where everybody knows you and gossip is the preferred local pastime. It seems counterintuitive because the arts and entertainment world here is the big leagues, but really, people are buzzing with their own inspiration and projects and busy-ness that nobody really has time or interest in worrying too long about you or your flaws or mistakes. That makes it so much easier to try new things, to make bold choices, and to take risks, which are essential for the survival of the inner and external artist. There's endless room to evolve. I've performed on Broadway and with Hugh Jackman at Radio City Music Hall, but have also fallen in front of approximately 40 people in the subway station and have done a dance audition with a mysterious stain on the back of my leggings I wasn't aware of until long after the audition ended. New York has given me true showbiz glamour and true cringe...and I'm still standing! I feel unstoppable!

  • What’s one project you’re quietly nurturing right now, behind the scenes of your more public work?

I'm not one to usually speak about artistic projects before they've completed their full gestation period, so to speak, but I will say I'm far from done with releasing original music, and that makes me so happy. It's been five years since I released my last single, and I've done so much living since then! (Folks interested in my music can find me on all streaming platforms as 'Gabriela Francesca'.)

  • Do you have any end of summer plans or rituals?

I'll be heading to my parents' home in Illinois to visit and celebrate my birthday (Leo gang!), which I'm so excited for. I just want a good old-fashioned summer backyard party. Grilling, pool time, good music on the speakers, rolling around in the grass with the dogs, maybe some ice cream cake... I find I'm so much happier when I just give into what my inner child wants. And this year, she wants a simple summer birthday with loved ones reminiscent of her summers growing up. Then, I'll wrap up the summer off the coast of Naples, Italy on an island called Ischia, which is where my partner Nikko is from. I've gone there with him to visit his family for three summers thus far and it's one tradition I will make sure sticks around forever!
