How did you two meet, and what was the impetus behind creating Doce Mezcal?
Gabriela: We met during my first business running a lifestyle PR firm where the jewelry Brand Mia was working for became one of my clients. Colleagues in business turned friends led us to the start of Doce, we then came together with our Founding Partner Gabriela in 2019 after a shared vision of wanting to hold ourselves (and our drinks) to a higher standard while forming a deeper connection with the spirits we enjoy! We sought out to create a brand that reflected the ideals of the modern consumer, and in 2022 Doce was officially born.

What does a day in the life look like as co-founders of Doce?
Gabriela: The day usually starts with all of the behind-the-scenes operations that it takes to run Doce, things such as establishing the weekly sales plan for the team, building brand and investor decks, creating content, accounting/expenses, checking in with distributors - the list goes on! The 2nd half of the work day starts around 3/4pm and is typically spent visiting & activating existing retail or bar/restaurant accounts where Doce is sold, or taking meetings at new ones!

Do you believe you were meant to meet when you did? Why or why not?
Mia: Yes, but not in a dramatic, single moment way. I think what’s beautiful about our story is that all three of us met at very different points in our lives. Gaby Arce and I met while studying abroad in Qatar, and Gabriela Lawrence and I met years later when we were both new to New York and building our early careers. We grew individually over time, and Doce didn’t come from one specific moment, but it came from years of shared experiences, change, and growth. Looking back (now almost 13 years!), it feels less like chance and more like timing unfolded exactly when it was meant.

What does “mixing” mean to you—whether in life, relationships, or work?
Gabriela: Mixing to me means being able to live a full life, a balanced one. One where you get to experience the best it has to offer, whenever the time is right. Focusing on your goals and taking care of yourself but still being able to be free, not take yourself too seriously while having fun and enjoying life with family and friends!

What’s your favorite way to enjoy Doce?
Gabriela: A mezcal martini! Doce Mezcal, blanc vermouth, orange bitters - orange twist!
Mia: Neat. I really like to taste the spirit as it is, and feeling connected to the process and the people behind it. -
What advice would you give to other women building something together?
Mia: Choose partners you respect as much as you care about, and give the relationship the same attention you give the business. Most importantly, allow each other room to evolve, because it’s not just the company that’s growing, but the relationship too, often in ways you don’t notice, especially with the business of the day to day.
